Nigeria Raises Concern Over Attacks on Its Citizens in South Africa
May 3,2026
The government of Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s acting High Commissioner following recent attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in South Africa.
In a statement, Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry said it will formally express its “deep concern” over the incidents during a scheduled meeting, warning that the situation could impact relations between the two countries.
The meeting is expected to address rising anti-immigrant protests, as well as reported cases of harassment, violence, and attacks on businesses owned by Nigerians. Reports indicate that at least two Nigerians and four Ethiopians have lost their lives in recent weeks, with other foreign nationals also affected.
Tensions have been increasing amid accusations by some South Africans that foreigners are taking jobs and contributing to crime. In recent demonstrations, some groups have reportedly stopped individuals in public spaces to demand identification, while foreign-owned shops have been asked to close due to fears of possible violence.
Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the attacks but also urged foreign nationals to comply with local laws. He also reminded citizens of the support African countries provided during the struggle against apartheid.
The situation has drawn wider regional concern. Recently, Ghana also summoned South Africa’s envoy after a video circulated showing a Ghanaian man being questioned over his immigration status.
South Africa remains a key destination for migrants across the continent, with about 2.4 million foreign nationals living in the country. However, the recent developments have renewed concerns about xenophobia and the safety of migrants.
