EPA Takes Styrofoam Ban Campaign to Makola Market, Engages Traders on Sustainable Packaging

Accra || The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) today intensified its nationwide public education campaign on the ban of Styrofoam products with a major outreach programme at Makola Market, one of Ghana's busiest commercial centres.

The campaign, held under the theme "Makola Market Outreach," brought together EPA officials and stakeholders to engage market women, traders, food vendors, and shoppers on the implementation of the Styrofoam ban and the need to adopt environmentally friendly packaging alternatives.

The outreach formed part of the Authority's broader efforts to raise public awareness and encourage compliance with the ban, which aims to reduce plastic pollution, improve sanitation, and protect Ghana's environment.

During the exercise, EPA officials interacted directly with traders, explaining the environmental and health hazards associated with the continued use of Styrofoam products. Market women were educated on the benefits of switching to reusable, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging materials, while questions and concerns regarding the transition were addressed.

The Authority stressed that improper disposal of Styrofoam remains a major contributor to clogged drains, flooding, and environmental pollution, particularly in urban centres such as Accra. The campaign therefore sought to encourage behavioural change by promoting sustainable consumption and responsible waste management practices.

Participants were urged to become ambassadors for environmental protection by supporting the ban and educating customers and fellow traders on the importance of reducing single-use plastic waste.

The EPA reaffirmed its commitment to sustained public engagement across markets, schools, institutions, and communities nationwide to ensure the successful implementation of the Styrofoam ban. The Authority noted that collaboration with traders and the general public is essential to achieving cleaner markets, healthier communities, and a more sustainable Ghana.

The Makola Market outreach is expected to be followed by similar educational campaigns in other markets and commercial centres across the country as part of the EPA's ongoing efforts to promote environmental stewardship and responsible waste management.
