EPA and Ghana's Most Beautiful Queens Launch Nationwide Campaign Against Styrofoam Products

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), in collaboration with the Ghana's Most Beautiful Queens, has officially launched a nationwide public awareness campaign to support the implementation of Ghana's ban on Styrofoam products.
The campaign, which commenced on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, began at the EPA Headquarters in Osu and proceeded through major commercial areas to Makola Market. It forms part of the Authority's efforts to educate the public, traders, manufacturers, food vendors, and consumers on the environmental and public health implications of Styrofoam use and the need to transition to sustainable alternatives.
The initiative seeks to increase public awareness of the nationwide ban while encouraging behavioural change among citizens and businesses. Participants distributed educational materials, engaged directly with market women and traders, and demonstrated environmentally friendly packaging options as part of efforts to promote compliance with the new policy.
The involvement of the Ghana's Most Beautiful Queens is expected to amplify the campaign's outreach by inspiring young people and communities to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles and support Ghana's transition towards sustainable consumption and waste management.
The EPA called on manufacturers, importers, distributors, food vendors, retailers, and the general public to fully comply with the ban by adopting reusable, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging materials. The Authority stressed that protecting the environment requires collective action and that every Ghanaian has a role to play in reducing plastic pollution and safeguarding the country's natural resources.
The nationwide awareness campaign forms part of broader government efforts to improve environmental sanitation, reduce plastic waste, mitigate urban flooding, and advance Ghana's commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
The Environmental Protection Authority reaffirmed its commitment to working with public institutions, civil society organizations, the private sector, traditional authorities, and development partners to ensure the successful implementation of the Styrofoam Products Ban and to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Ghana for present and future generations.
