Africa’s Energy Transition Gains Momentwith Ghana Gas Project

Africa’s push for a just energy transition is gathering pace as the continent balances its development ambitions with climate commitments. With the population expected to nearly double to 2.5 billion by 2050, energy access remains one of the biggest challenges, as nearly 600 million people still lack reliable electricity.

In Ghana, Genser Energy has taken a significant step with the completion of a 430km natural gas pipeline network in the western region, recently extended to Kumasi. Backed by a $325 million syndicated financing package led by Standard Bank, the project provides a cleaner and more reliable alternative to diesel and heavy fuels widely used in industries such as gold mining, manufacturing, and logistics.

Although natural gas is still a fossil fuel, it emits less carbon than traditional fuels. Standard Bank stresses that financing such transitional projects is part of a pragmatic decarbonisation strategy supporting industrialisation, expanding access, and gradually reducing emissions.

Genser CEO Baafour Asiamah-Adjei emphasises that Africa’s energy transition must be realistic, protecting communities and economies while avoiding sudden shocks. By investing in infrastructure, local skills, and partnerships, the project highlights how Africa’s energy future can be both sustainable and inclusive.
