President Mahama Embarks on State Visit to Belarus

June 5, 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has commenced a state visit to the Republic of Belarus aimed at deepening diplomatic relations and expanding cooperation between Ghana and Belarus in key sectors of development.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Belarusian President Aleksandr Grigorievich Lukashenko, is expected to explore new opportunities in economic, agricultural, educational, technical, and commercial cooperation between the two countries.

Upon his arrival in Minsk, President Mahama is scheduled to lay a wreath at the Victory Monument in honour of Soviet soldiers and Belarusian partisans who demonstrated exceptional bravery during World War II.

A major highlight of the visit will be high-level bilateral discussions between President Mahama and President Lukashenko. The two leaders are expected to hold private talks before participating in an expanded diplomatic session involving ministers and senior government officials from both countries. Discussions will focus on strengthening strategic partnerships in agriculture, education, and commerce.

As part of his industrialisation and food security agenda, President Mahama will travel to Brest, one of Belarus' historic western cities, where he will tour a major agro-processing facility specializing in milk, cheese, and baby food products. The visit is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing and promote partnerships in agro-processing and food production.

The President will also visit the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex, a significant historical site commemorating the Soviet resistance against Nazi forces during World War II.

In addition, the Ghanaian leader is scheduled to tour Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned as one of Europe's last remaining primeval forests. The visit highlights the shared commitment of Ghana and Belarus to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The state visit is expected to culminate in the signing of at least four landmark bilateral agreements aimed at enhancing institutional collaboration and promoting mutual economic growth between the two nations.

President Mahama is expected to conclude his visit and return to Accra on June 9, 2026.
