KGL Denies Receiving GHC400,000 From NLA, Says It Was GHC200,000

October 1, 2025

The KGL Group has denied claims that its foundation received GHC400,000 from the National Lottery Authority’s (NLA) Good Causes Foundation, insisting it only received GHC200,000.

According to disbursement records with The Fourth Estate sighted by vista news gh.com, the NLA’s Good Causes Foundation made two payments GHC300,000 (cheque number: 689432) and GHC100,000 (cheque number: 306453) to the KGL Foundation. But in an email response, KGL maintained that its foundation only received GHC200,000, which was donated by the then NLA Director-General, Samuel Awuku, during the launch of the KGL Foundation in 2023.

“Our review of the KGL Foundation account indicates that GHC200,000.00 received from Good Causes Foundation was donated by the former Director-General, Mr. Sammy Awuku, on behalf of the NLA during the KGL Foundation’s formal launch event; No records of any other transactions from the Good Causes Foundation to the KGL Foundation have been found,” the company said.

The KGL Foundation operates exclusively NLA’s multi-billion-cedi 5/90 lotto, which generated more than GHC3 billion in 2024. Despite its crucial role in sustaining NLA’s revenue, many have questioned why funds intended under the National Lotto Act (Act 722) for orphans, the needy, and the mentally afflicted would be donated to an endowed organisation such as KGL.

Conflicting Accounts

While KGL insists it received only half of what the NLA’s records show, Mr. Awuku, the immediate past Director-General of the NLA, could not confirm the exact figure. He, however, defended the expenditure, describing it as part of a “collaborative support” arrangement with KGL.

“There was no time I did that without informing the board. KGL gives in terms of support over two million cedis every year as Good Causes, and when they also requested collaborative support, I don’t think it was anything out of the ordinary,” he said.

Mr. Awuku argued that the expenditure never exceeded GHC200,000,though the Good Causes Foundation’s database captured GHC400,000.

 The Accountability Questions

The Fourth Estate’s investigations into the NLA’s Good Causes Foundation intercepted by vistanewsgh.com which has disbursed nearly GHC50 million since 2021 revealed that significant sums were spent on conferences, awards, gala dinners, comedy shows, and donations to political and business elites, rather than on vulnerable groups as mandated by law.

The discrepancy between KGL’s account and the NLA’s disbursement records further fuels concerns about transparency in the management of funds meant to support the vulnerable.

For now, KGL maintains it received GHC200,000, while NLA’s books show GHC400,000 Between denials, justifications, and conflicting records, one fact remains: the intended beneficiaries the poor, orphans, and the mentally afflicted  have been left out.
