October 13,2025

Akandoh Appeals for Mercy Following Unprofessional Remarks Against His Person

The Ministry of Health has issued a press release today addressing a controversy involving a staff nurse who made alleged unprofessional comments about the Health Minister on social media.

The Ministry acknowledged that it has taken notice of a query letter issued to Ms. Bernice Aboagye, a Staff Nurse, following comments circulating on social media that were allegedly made against Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health.

The Ghana Health Service has been commended for promptly upholding professional standards and the Code of Conduct prescribed for health workers in addressing the matter.

Minister's Appeal for Leniency

In a remarkable display of restraint, Hon. Akandoh has personally appealed to the Ghana Health Service to temper justice with mercy when dealing with the nurse's case. The Minister stated that both he and the government welcome divergent views and constructive criticism as part of their commitment to fostering tolerance and openness to diverse opinions.

Call for Responsible Expression

The Minister used the opportunity to urge all health workers to express their opinions responsibly and respectfully, without resorting to insults. He emphasized that such conduct contributes to the healthy growth and development of the health sector.

Ministry's Position on Demonstrations

The Ministry clarified its stance on freedom of expression, stating it has no objection to demonstrations as legitimate expressions of frustration and a constitutional right of every citizen. However, the Ministry made clear it will not condone the use of abusive language or acts of indiscipline during such demonstrations.

Reminder to Health Professionals

The Ministry concluded by reminding all health professionals to be circumspect in their public communications and social media engagements, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professional standards while exercising their rights to free expression.

The press release was signed by Tony Goodman, Head of Health Training Institutions and Spokesperson for the Ministry, and dated October 12, 2025.

This incident highlights the delicate balance between freedom of expression and professional conduct in Ghana's public health sector, with the Minister's call for amnesty being seen as a gesture of reconciliation and dialogue.
