One Year of Impact: Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse Drives Institutional Reforms at EPA

January 18

A year after her appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse has recorded significant strides in institutional strengthening, regulatory enforcement, and environmental governance across Ghana.

Since assuming office, Prof. Browne Klutse has led far-reaching institutional reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, accountability, and sustainability within the Authority. Notably, she has overseen the establishment of two additional departments, including a Department of Resource Mobilization, to strengthen the EPA’s financial sustainability and operational effectiveness.

Under her leadership, the Authority has also witnessed an enhancement in staff strength, ensuring improved technical capacity and nationwide coverage. This expansion has supported the strengthening of compliance and enforcement regimes, enabling the EPA to better discharge its mandate of environmental regulation and protection.

A major milestone of her tenure has been the establishment of EPA area offices across the country, a move that has decentralized operations and brought regulatory oversight closer to communities. This development has significantly improved response time, monitoring, and stakeholder engagement at the local level.

Prof. Browne Klutse has also played a key role in national efforts to combat illegal mining (galamsey), working collaboratively with state institutions, traditional authorities, and local communities to curb the menace and restore degraded environments.

In recognition of her leadership and developmental contributions, the chiefs and people of her traditional area have enstooled her as a Development Queen, an honour that reflects her impact beyond the Authority and underscores her commitment to community development and environmental stewardship.

As she continues to lead the Environmental Protection Authority, stakeholders remain hopeful that Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse will build on these achievements and sustain the momentum of reform and impact, strengthening the Authority’s role in safeguarding Ghana’s environment for present and future generations.
