The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed the death of a soldier during a counter-terrorism training exercise in the Upper East Region.

The deceased, identified as 218079 Private Adotey of the 6th Infantry Battalion, reportedly died following an explosion during operations in the Binduri Forest area as part of “Exercise Storm Shield,” a military training programme focused on strengthening the preparedness of security personnel against terrorism-related threats.

Confirming the incident at the closing ceremony of the exercise, Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, described the death as unfortunate and painful, noting that the soldier died in the line of duty while serving the nation.

According to him, the exercise highlighted both the dedication of military personnel and the occupational risks associated with military operations.

Major General Gbetanu paid tribute to the late Private Adotey, who served as a physical training instructor with the 6th Infantry Battalion, describing him as a committed officer whose sacrifice reflected the dangers faced by security personnel in protecting national security.

A minute of silence was observed during the ceremony in honour of the deceased soldier.

The Army Chief also extended condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues of the deceased, and the entire Ghana Armed Forces.

He stressed the importance of the counter-terrorism exercise, especially in strengthening security operations within border communities vulnerable to violent extremism and terrorist activities.

The Ghana Armed Forces further assured the public that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the explosion are currently underway while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and national security across the country.
