EPA Announces Nationwide Ban on ''takeaway Pack'' Products Effective January 2027
May 25,2026
The Environmental Protection Authority has announced a nationwide ban on the production, importation, sale, distribution, and use of polystyrene foam products, commonly known as “Styrofoam” or takeaway packs, effective 1st January 2027.
The directive, issued by the Authority’s management on 25th May 2026, follows President John Dramani Mahama’s policy announcement during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration, where government outlined plans to tackle plastic pollution and protect public health and the environment.
According to the EPA, the ban will apply to all expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products used for commercial and human activities. These include food packaging containers, disposable cups and plates, takeaway packs used by restaurants and food vendors, foam mattresses, insulation materials, and packaging or cushioning materials.
The Authority explained that the measure forms part of broader national efforts to improve environmental sanitation, reduce plastic pollution, and promote sustainable development in Ghana.
However, the EPA clarified that certain EPS products intended for medical, scientific, laboratory, and diagnostic purposes will be exempted from the ban, subject to regulatory approval.
In preparation for the implementation of the directive, the Authority is urging manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, hospitality operators, and consumers to begin transitioning to reusable, recyclable, and environmentally sustainable alternatives.
The EPA further disclosed that it will intensify stakeholder engagement, public education campaigns, technical consultations, compliance monitoring, and regulatory inspections ahead of the enforcement date.
The Authority also indicated that it will collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), port authorities, customs officials, and industry regulators to ensure effective nationwide enforcement of the policy.
The general public has been encouraged to support the initiative by adopting environmentally friendly packaging alternatives and sustainable consumption practices.
The EPA described the policy as a critical national intervention aimed at safeguarding the environment and ensuring a cleaner and healthier future for Ghanaians.
