EPA Leads World Oceans Day 2026 Celebration, Advocates Protection of Amanzule Wetlands

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), together with the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, the Forestry Commission, and Hɛn Mpoano, commemorated World Oceans Day 2026 with a stakeholder engagement and awareness programme held at Maaha Beach Hotel on June 9.

The event sought to deepen public awareness of the importance of protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, with a special focus on efforts to have the Amanzule Wetlands designated as Ghana’s seventh Ramsar site under the Convention on Wetlands.

The celebration was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah; Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands, Dr. Musonda Mumba; Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse; and the District Chief Executive for Ellembelle, Hon. Joseph Agyekum.

Speakers at the event highlighted the ecological significance of wetlands and oceans, stressing the need for collective action to preserve these natural resources for future generations.

As part of the activities, participants enjoyed cultural performances and educational exhibitions organised by Hɛn Mpoano, which showcased the environmental importance and biodiversity of the Amanzule Wetlands.

The programme also recognised the contributions of young people to environmental conservation through the presentation of awards to schools that excelled in art competitions and other environmental awareness initiatives.

Organisers noted that the observance of World Oceans Day serves as an important platform for promoting sustainable management of marine resources and strengthening advocacy for the conservation of critical ecosystems such as the Amanzule Wetlands.

The proposed Ramsar designation is expected to enhance protection for the wetland area while supporting ongoing efforts to conserve its rich biodiversity and ecological value.
