Two Killed After Building Collapse Following Heavy Rains in Cape Coast
June 22, 2026
Two people have lost their lives after a building collapsed in Cape Coast following heavy rainfall that battered parts of the Central Regional capital in the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa, according to hospital authorities.
The incident occurred at Gyagyaano, behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, where a single-room structure reportedly caved in, trapping four occupants beneath the rubble.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), personnel from the Cape Coast Metropolitan and Central Regional Fire Service headquarters responded swiftly to a distress call and immediately launched a rescue operation.
Firefighters successfully rescued all four victims from the collapsed structure and handed them over to the National Ambulance Service for transportation to the Ewim Polyclinic for emergency medical treatment.
The victims comprised one male and three females.
However, despite efforts by medical personnel, Anastasia Abakah and Adwoa Baduwa were later pronounced dead at the health facility.
Preliminary investigations by the Central Regional Fire Service indicate that the building's structural integrity may have been weakened by the heavy rainfall, leading to its collapse.
The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns about the safety of aging and vulnerable structures during Ghana's rainy season.
In the wake of the incident, the Ghana National Fire Service has urged residents living in old mud houses and buildings exhibiting signs of structural weakness to seek professional assessments and, where necessary, evacuate such structures to prevent future disasters.
The Service further advised property owners to carry out regular maintenance and structural inspections, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the incident while providing support to affected families.
