Heavy Downpour Triggers Flooding Across Parts of Accra, Causes Major Traffic Delays

June 29, 2026

A prolonged downpour that began on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning has caused widespread flooding across parts of Accra, disrupting traffic, inundating homes, and leaving many commuters stranded.

The heavy rains submerged several major roads, forcing motorists to drive cautiously through flooded sections, while others had to seek alternative routes due to rising water levels.

The flooding severely affected the Monday morning commute, resulting in long traffic queues and delays as residents struggled to reach workplaces and schools.

Communities and roads affected include sections of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa–Tesano Road, the Accra–Kasoa Highway, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic Junction in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, according to residents and road users.

In some flood-prone communities, homes and business premises were inundated, prompting occupants to move their belongings to safer locations as floodwaters continued to rise.

Authorities have advised motorists to avoid flooded roads where possible and urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and relocate to higher ground if necessary.

Accra continues to face recurring flooding during the rainy season, with poor drainage infrastructure, indiscriminate waste disposal, and rapid urbanisation frequently identified as key contributors to the problem.

Emergency response agencies are expected to assess the extent of the damage as weather conditions improve and more information becomes available.
