Baba Jamal Wins Ayawaso East By-Election with 63% of Votes

February 3,2026

Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been declared winner of the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election in the Greater Accra Region.

The poll, held on March 3 across 113 polling centres, recorded what observers described as a low turnout. Out of approximately 50,000 registered voters, 16,928 cast their ballots to elect a representative to serve the remainder of the late Nasser Toure Mahama’s term in the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

At the close of polls and collation, officers of the Electoral Commission packed up after successfully supervising what was widely reported as a peaceful and incident-free election.

Baba Jamal secured 10,884 votes, representing 63 per cent of the total valid votes cast, clinching a decisive victory.

His closest contender, Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,009 votes, representing 23 per cent.

The other candidates recorded the following results:

  1. Ibrahim Iddrisu – Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG): 43 votes

  2. Mohammed Umar Sanda – Independent: 1,885 votes

  3. David Kanor – Independent: 104 votes

The election was conducted under tight security, with a significant presence of the Ghana Police Service personnel deployed across polling centres. The heightened security arrangement is believed to have contributed to the calm atmosphere throughout the exercise.

Several political heavyweights from both major parties monitored proceedings at various polling stations.

From the NDC side, notable figures included Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former National Chairman; Linda Akweley Ocloo, Greater Accra Regional Minister; and Tanko Computer, Director of Elections for the party.

Representing the NPP were Henry Quartey, former Greater Accra Regional Minister; Boakye Agyarko, former Energy Minister; and Hawa Koomson, former Fisheries Minister.

Following his victory, Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn into Parliament by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, at the next sitting of the House.

The outcome strengthens the NDC’s position in Parliament as the party celebrates a commanding win in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
