Mahama Heads to UN for Reparatory Justice Talks

March 23,2026

President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to a United Nations special session on reparatory justice, as part of a multi-city visit to the United States.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency Communications on March 22, 2026, the visit will take the President to New York and Pennsylvania for engagements centered on reparatory justice and the remembrance of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

At the United Nations Headquarters, President Mahama is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at a High-Level Special Event focused on reparatory justice for enslaved Africans. The event is expected to bring together world leaders and high-level dignitaries to discuss issues of historical injustice.

He will also address the UN General Assembly during the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

The Presidency noted that the President will present Ghana’s position already adopted by the African Union which seeks to declare the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.

As part of the visit, President Mahama will lay a wreath at the African Burial Grounds Memorial in New York in honour of enslaved Africans.

His itinerary also includes a stop in Pennsylvania, where he will deliver a keynote address at Lincoln University and engage members of the Ghanaian community at Temple University.
