Transport Unions to Suspend Services Over CMB Eviction

September 17, 2025

Transport unions in Accra have announced plans to withdraw their services from Tuesday, September 16, in protest against the eviction of drivers operating at the Central Business District (CMB).

The unions say a private developer has ejected drivers from the area, disrupting transport and trading activities and depriving many of their livelihoods.

At a press briefing in Accra, union leaders vowed to continue the protest until their concerns are addressed. They also disclosed plans to march to the Jubilee House to present a petition to President John Dramani Mahama.

“All drivers, particularly those serving the central business district, will cease operations in solidarity,” the unions declared.

According to the drivers and traders, they have operated on the land for decades but claim private developers have gradually taken over portions, leaving them with little space.

The Chairperson of the Containers Owners Association said members were determined to resist further takeovers, stressing: “We have had enough and will not allow anyone to take over our means of survival.”

The planned withdrawal of services is expected to cause major disruptions for commuters in Accra.
