Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has assured stakeholders of government’s commitment to swiftly resolving the ongoing conflict between Asanko Gold Ghana Limited and surrounding local communities.
The assurance came during a working visit to the company’s site on Tuesday, September 16, following violent clashes that resulted in the destruction of property worth over $33 million and the death of a resident on September 9.
The confrontation between military personnel and local residents occurred after community members encroached on the mining concession, citing unmet development expectations from the company.
Addressing the leadership of Asanko Gold, Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah stressed the need for peaceful coexistence between the company and the host communities.
“As a government, we are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter and ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated. Dialogue and mutual understanding must prevail,” he said.
During his visit, the Minister inspected Asanko Gold’s operations and urged management to strictly comply with mining regulations while making community engagement and development central to their operations.
He also visited the bereaved family of the deceased, who was the Assembly Member for the area, offering condolences and pledging a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
The Minister was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including:Isaac Tandoh, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission,Prof. J.S.Y. Kuma, Advisor to the Minister,Kofi Adjei, Chief Inspector of Mines,Mawusi Mawuenyefia, Director of Communications, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources,Ing. Frank Asare, National Coordinator, Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) and Other senior officials from the Ministry.
The Ministry has since called for calm as efforts are made to reconcile the company and the affected communities.
