GTEC Orders UCC Vice-Chancellor to Step Aside Over Retirement Age

September 19, 2025

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, to step aside after reaching the mandatory retirement age.

In a formal directive, GTEC instructed that Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto assume the role of acting Vice-Chancellor until a substantive appointment is made.

The decision is aimed at ensuring compliance with Ghana’s tertiary education regulations, which stipulate age limits for leadership positions in public universities.

University sources indicate that Professor Boampong’s tenure officially ended upon reaching the statutory retirement age, prompting GTEC to take swift action to maintain administrative continuity.

The University Council is expected to begin the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor in the coming weeks while Professor Aheto oversees academic and administrative affairs in an acting capacity.
