Government Proposes Renaming Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport

February 6, 2026

The government has unveiled plans to change the name of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, a move that would redefine the identity of Ghana’s principal aviation hub.

The proposal was made public by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga during a media briefing ahead of the opening of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament.

Mr Ayariga said the initiative is part of wider efforts to ensure that national institutions reflect Ghana’s democratic ideals and contemporary national values.

He noted that the proposed change would follow established constitutional and legislative procedures, with Parliament expected to play a decisive role in the process.

“Government has taken steps towards renaming Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport, subject to parliamentary approval,” he explained.

According to the Majority Leader, a bill will be introduced in Parliament to provide the necessary legal framework, emphasising that the decision must be lawful and guided by public interest.

The announcement is likely to trigger nationwide discussion, particularly in view of the historical importance associated with the airport’s current name. Lawmakers are expected to deliberate extensively on the proposal once it is formally laid before the House.
