Over 800 Students Left in Limbo as GTEC Closes Royal Nursing College
February 19, 2026
More than 800 students have been left stranded following the closure of Royal Nursing College at Tafo Nyhiaeso in the Ashanti Region by the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC).
The regulatory body ordered the immediate shutdown of the institution after management reportedly failed to present valid documentation confirming its accreditation status. According to GTEC, the college does not have accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council and also disregarded a June 2024 directive instructing it to stop admitting new students.
Authorities say the college had been operating without proper registration with the relevant oversight bodies, raising serious concerns about academic standards and programme administration.
GTEC officials carried out an inspection of the campus on Thursday, February 19. After an hour-long review, they announced the immediate closure, explaining that the action was necessary to safeguard students and enforce compliance with national education regulations.
The Council stated that plans are underway to facilitate the transfer of eligible students to accredited institutions. However, it clarified that the process will not be automatic. Students admitted in 2024 will not qualify for transfer consideration. Additionally, the college’s reported affiliation with the University of Cape Coast must be valid, and only students enrolled before 2024 who met admission requirements may be eligible for placement elsewhere. Special arrangements are expected for final-year students to enable them to complete their programmes.
The closure triggered scenes of distress on campus, with several students visibly emotional. Some expressed frustration, noting that they had recently paid tuition fees and were uncertain about their academic future.
In a related development, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department accompanied GTEC officials during the operation and reportedly picked up the wife of the college’s owner along with some members of management for further investigations.
