Dr. Tony Aidoo: ‘I Don’t Want to Witness NDC’s Post-Mahama Era’

September 18, 2025

Veteran National Democratic Congress (NDC) politician Dr. Tony Aidoo says he would rather not live to see the party’s succession battle after President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure ends.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Gold, the 76-year-old former Senior Presidential Aide expressed deep political fatigue and personal readiness for life’s end.

“I don’t want to be here. Maybe by the time it comes to that point, I’ll be gone,” he said when asked about the next NDC flagbearer.
“I’m old. God has been good to me, but I wouldn’t mind if He takes me today.”

Dr. Aidoo stressed that the success or failure of the Mahama administration will determine who can effectively lead the party afterward.

“Whoever is planning to take over from Mahama, a great deal depends upon the outcome of the Mahama administration,” he noted. “If it does well, it inures to the party, and therefore it creates a wind on which the potential or the prospective person can ride.”

His remarks come as the NDC pursues ambitious plans, including a projected GH₵20 billion infrastructure program and efforts to stabilize Ghana’s economy initiatives that could shape the party’s political fortunes.

Known for his frank political commentary, Dr. Aidoo’s reflections underscore a generational shift within the NDC, as senior figures contemplate passing the torch to a new crop of leaders.
