Government Begins Payment of Outstanding Allowances to Assembly Members

January 31,2026

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) has announced that outstanding allowances owed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDA) Members are now being processed for payment.

In a wireless message dated January 30, 2026, and signed by the Chief Director, Amin Abdul-Rahaman, the Ministry said funds covering allowances from August to December 2025 have been released and transferred through the Bank of Ghana to the respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

The directive, issued on behalf of the sector minister, instructs all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to urgently expedite internal payment processes to ensure Assembly Members receive their entitlements without delay.

“The Ministry wishes to inform all MMDCEs that the five (5) months outstanding amount for the payment of allowances to Hon. Assembly Members have been transferred through the Bank of Ghana to the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies,” the statement said.

The Ministry further directed MMDCEs to ensure that accurate account details of Assembly Members are submitted through the Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs) to facilitate smooth and timely disbursement of the funds.

Regional Ministers have also been tasked to bring the directive to the attention of MMDCEs within their jurisdictions and ensure strict compliance.

The announcement is expected to bring relief to Assembly Members across the country who have raised concerns in recent months over delays in the payment of their allowances.

The move forms part of the “Reset Agenda” being championed by President John Dramani Mahama, aimed at easing the financial burden on Assembly Members and strengthening grassroots governance across the country.

Meanwhile, VistaNewsGH.com attempted to contact the Assembly Member for the Kwaman Electoral Area, Hon. Ebenezer Annobil, to confirm whether he has received his allowance, but all efforts to reach him proved unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

The message was copied to all Regional Ministers and Regional Coordinating Directors, underscoring government’s intention to fast-track the payment process nationwide.
