Iran Urges India to Release Seized Tankers Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions
March 18,2026
Iran has called on India to release three oil tankers seized in February, as part of ongoing discussions aimed at ensuring safe passage for Indian-linked vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Indian authorities reportedly detained the vessels near their territorial waters, alleging that they had concealed or altered their identities and were involved in illegal ship-to-ship transfers.
As part of diplomatic efforts, Iran’s ambassador to New Delhi met officials from India’s foreign ministry on Monday to address the issue. One source indicated that Iran also requested supplies of certain medicines and medical equipment during the discussions.
However, India’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, downplayed the claims, stating that recent ship movements reflect longstanding engagement between the two countries and insisted that no exchanges were taking place.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities have disclosed that at least 22 Indian-flagged vessels and 611 Indian seafarers remain in the Persian Gulf. Shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has reportedly slowed significantly following escalating tensions linked to the conflict involving Iran.
The situation highlights growing concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.
