Abronye Granted GH¢50,000 Bail
September 15, 2025
Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye and the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been granted GH¢50,000 bail after days in police custody.
His lawyer, Daniel Mantey Addo, confirmed that the legal team is taking steps to meet the bail conditions for his immediate release.
Abronye’s earlier denial of bail had sparked public criticism. Legal experts, including private lawyer and former Akim Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea, condemned the decision.
“Why do you want to remand the man for a misdemeanor?” Atta Akyea asked, adding that other offenders facing more serious allegations have received lenient treatment.
Other lawyers also weighed in. Martin Kpebu described the denial of bail as “not good law,” while Oliver Barker-Vormawor accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, of using the police to settle personal scores.
“If the IGP thinks Abronye’s comments are defamatory, he should go to court like every citizen,” Barker-Vormawor argued in a Facebook post, warning that the continued remand of Abronye undermines constitutional rights.
Abronye was arrested on September 8 for alleged offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace. He was arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on September 9, remanded, and asked to reappear on September 12. The case has now been adjourned to September 19, 2025.
Key figures from the NPP, including former National Chairman Freddie Blay, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and National Youth Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, appeared in court to show their support.
The case has ignited debates about fairness in Ghana’s justice system, selective application of the law, and the balance between free expression and public order.
