Mahama Nominates Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

The nomination, made in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, has been forwarded to the Council of State for consideration.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, a distinguished jurist, has served with diligence and integrity across all levels of the judiciary the High Court, Court of Appeal, and currently, the Supreme Court. He has also been acting as Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, following the vacancy created at the top of Ghana’s judiciary.

According to the Presidency, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has made “invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence” and earned widespread respect across the Bench, the Bar, and the wider legal fraternity for his intellect, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to justice.

A statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, emphasized that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s wealth of experience and long service on the Bench render him “eminently qualified for the high office of Chief Justice.”

If approved, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will officially assume the role, bringing continuity to the leadership of Ghana’s judiciary at a critical time for the country’s legal and constitutional development.
