President Mahama Proposes Fast-Track Prosecution for Public Officials Who Misuse State Funds

October 10,2025

President John Dramani Mahama has directed that public officials found guilty of misusing or misappropriating public funds should be prosecuted through a fast-track judicial process to deter others from engaging in similar misconduct.

The President warned that persons found guilty of infractions or causing the loss of public resources will be fast-tracked to Nsawam prison. He made these remarks while addressing the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards, Councils, Chief Directors, and Chief Executives of the Public Services Commission in the Volta Region.

President Mahama described the misuse of public funds exposed at Public Accounts Committee hearings as "pathetic", expressing frustration over persistent recklessness in managing state resources.

The President emphasized the urgency of establishing a credible accountability system that ensures real consequences for public officials who mismanage or misuse public resources, stating that a deterrent must be created so people know they can be held responsible for their actions.

President Mahama announced plans to meet with the Chief Justice, Attorney General, and other key officials on October 9, 2025, to discuss lasting solutions to the reckless misuse of public funds in Ghana.

The President's stance comes amid growing public concern over recurring financial infractions highlighted in the Auditor-General's reports and during Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee hearings, which often reveal instances of financial mismanagement without corresponding prosecutions.
