President Mahama Recalls Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria Over Vote-Buying Allegations

February 7,2026

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, following allegations of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

A statement issued by the Presidency Communications on 7th February 2026 said the decision was taken in the interest of preserving the integrity of public office and maintaining public confidence in government.

According to the statement, allegations of vote-buying were made against several aspirants who participated in the Ayawaso East primaries. However, President Mahama noted that Mr. Baba Jamal was the only serving public officeholder among the candidates, making his continued stay in office untenable under the circumstances.

The President’s directive followed a public announcement by the NDC General Secretary indicating that the party had commenced investigations into the alleged inducement and vote-buying during the primaries.

The statement stressed that the recall was carried out without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes and in strict adherence to the standards of conduct expected of public officeholders. It added that the move was necessary to avoid any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

The recall takes effect immediately, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs directed to take the necessary administrative and diplomatic steps to implement the President’s decision.

The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu (MP), Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
