Black Stars fall to Germany, concerns mount ahead of 2026 World Cup

April 1,2026

Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly, extending their winless run to four matches and raising fresh concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match exposed defensive frailties, with Ghana conceding a penalty just before halftime, converted by Kai Havertz. Despite an improved second-half performance, a late goal from Deniz Undav in the 88th minute sealed the victory for the hosts.

Ghana struggled to control the game, managing only 31% possession, which limited their attacking output. Questions have also been raised about the team’s tactical setup, with the formation leaving vulnerabilities, particularly on the flanks, and limited in-game adjustments affecting overall performance.

However, there were positives for Ghana. Abdul Fatawu Issahaku scored in the 70th minute, while players such as Jordan Ayew showed flashes of creativity and work rate.

With group-stage matches against Panama, England and Croatia approaching, Ghana faces a race against time to improve defensive organisation, tactical discipline and attacking efficiency ahead of the tournament.
