Government to Introduce Sports Levy as Key Source of Funding for National Sports Development

 The Government of Ghana has announced plans to introduce a new Sports Levy, which will serve as the primary source of revenue for the soon-to-be-established National Sports Fund.

The initiative, according to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Kofi Adams, aims to provide sustainable financing for the development and promotion of sports across the country. The fund is expected to support key areas such as infrastructure projects, athlete training, talent development, and international participation.

Speaking at the GHALCA President’s Cup in Accra, Mr. Adams explained that the Sports Levy will be designed to mobilize contributions from various sectors to ensure consistent funding for both elite and grassroots sports. He emphasized that the move forms part of government’s broader policy to reduce overreliance on state budget allocations and corporate sponsorships for sports financing.

“The introduction of the Sports Levy marks a new era for sports development in Ghana. It will provide the necessary resources to support our athletes, develop modern facilities, and make sports a viable industry,” Mr. Adams stated.

Stakeholders within the sports fraternity, including the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the National Sports Authority (NSA), have long advocated for a dedicated and predictable funding mechanism to support sports growth.

Although details of the levy’s implementation are yet to be disclosed, it is expected to draw contributions from sectors that benefit directly from sports-related activities, such as telecommunications, beverage companies, and betting operators.

Sports analysts have welcomed the government’s move, describing it as a progressive policy step that could transform Ghana’s sports landscape if managed with transparency and accountability.

The proposed Sports Levy underscores government’s renewed commitment to reviving sporting activities and nurturing Ghana’s next generation of athletes, following growing calls for improved investment in sports infrastructure and athlete welfare.
