Togo’s Former Defence Minister Arrested After Urging President Gnassingbé to Resign

 September 20, 2025

Former Togo Defence Minister Marguerite Gnakadé, a prominent critic of President Faure Gnassingbé, has been arrested after publicly calling for the president’s resignation and encouraging the military to support a transition of power, security sources confirmed.

Gnakadé who is Gnassingbé’s sister-in-law and served as defence minister from 2020 to 2022 was reportedly detained at her Lomé residence on Wednesday. Police sources told AFP she is accused of “serious acts,” including inciting the armed forces to rebellion.

The arrest follows weeks of deadly protests demanding Gnassingbé step down and free political prisoners. The president has ruled Togo since 2005, succeeding his father, Gnassingbé Éyadéma, who governed for 38 years. A new constitutional structure that elevated Gnassingbé to President of the Council of Ministers an office without term limits has intensified public anger.

Local media and activists say Gnakadé recently authored articles urging a “peaceful, inclusive national transition.” Opposition group Touche Pas A Ma Constitution condemned her arrest as an “abuse of power,” while youth movement M66 issued a 72-hour ultimatum for her release, threatening nationwide demonstrations.

Security sources told the BBC there is unease within the military over her detention, citing her efforts to improve soldiers’ welfare during her tenure. Judicial officials say she could face 10–20 years in prison if found guilty of charges tied to inciting disobedience or destabilising the armed forces.

The Togolese government has yet to comment. Civil society groups warn that Gnakadé’s arrest could further inflame tensions in a country already shaken by protests and a June crackdown that left at least seven people dead, according to rights organizations.
