US Reverses Visa Restrictions on Ghana, Restores Five-Year Multiple-Entry Privileges
September 27, 2025
Ghana has achieved a major diplomatic breakthrough as the United States has lifted the visa restrictions imposed on the country earlier this year, restoring access to five-year multiple-entry visas for Ghanaian citizens.
The announcement was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Friday, September 26. He disclosed that the news was officially communicated to him by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting with Ghana’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“Big win for Ghana! The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana have been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges,” Mr. Ablakwa wrote.
The minister added that the reversal followed months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between Accra and Washington.
In July 2025, the US government had restricted Ghanaian travelers to a maximum three-month single-entry visa, citing concerns over visa overstays, particularly among students. The policy, introduced under the Trump Administration, sparked widespread criticism and raised concerns about Ghana–US relations.
The latest development is being celebrated as a sign of renewed trust and stronger bilateral ties between Accra and Washington.
