Backchannel Diplomacy Intensifies in US–Iran Standoff

March 23,2026

Diplomatic efforts are quietly intensifying in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, as indirect negotiations continue through third-party mediators.

With no direct communication between Washington and Tehran, countries including Qatar, Egypt, and the United Kingdom are reportedly relaying messages between both sides in a bid to ease tensions and explore a possible diplomatic breakthrough.

According to a report by Axios, senior U.S. officials say the team of former President Donald Trump is weighing six major conditions that could shape any future agreement with Iran.

These include a proposed five-year halt to Iran’s missile programme, a complete ban on uranium enrichment within Iranian territory, and the dismantling of key nuclear facilities at Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. The U.S. is also pushing for strict international inspections of Iran’s nuclear activities, broader regional arms control measures, and an end to Tehran’s support for proxy groups across the Middle East.

The demands signal Washington’s insistence on sweeping restrictions and robust verification mechanisms as a prerequisite for easing sanctions and reaching a wider deal.

The reliance on intermediaries underscores the fragile nature of the talks, which are unfolding against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, including ongoing conflict, airstrikes, and strategic rivalries involving Israel and key Western allies.

Observers say while diplomacy is still active behind the scenes, the path to any agreement remains uncertain and heavily dependent on mutual concessions.
